Paving Superintendent
Position Summary:
The Paving Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of asphalt paving operations on construction projects. This role ensures projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and in accordance with company standards and specifications. The Superintendent coordinates crews, equipment, subcontractors, and materials while maintaining a strong focus on quality and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Oversight:
- Plan, schedule, and supervise all paving activities from start to finish
- Review project plans, specifications, and timelines
- Coordinate daily operations with project managers and other supervisors
- Ensure work is completed in compliance with contract requirements
Crew Management:
- Supervise and direct paving crews, foremen, and subcontractors
- Assign tasks and monitor productivity and performance
- Provide training, mentoring, and leadership to field staff
- Conduct daily tailgate/safety meetings
Quality Control:
- Ensure proper paving techniques, compaction, and material application
- Monitor grade, slope, and surface tolerances
- Address and correct any deficiencies promptly
Safety Compliance:
- Enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations
- Identify and mitigate job site hazards
- Ensure proper use of PPE and safe equipment operation
- Investigate and report incidents as required
Equipment & Materials:
- Coordinate equipment needs, maintenance, and utilization
- Monitor material deliveries and usage (asphalt, aggregates, etc.)
- Work with suppliers to ensure timely delivery and quality materials
Scheduling & Reporting:
- Maintain daily reports, including labor, equipment, and production
- Track project progress and adjust schedules as needed
- Communicate updates, delays, or issues to management
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 5+ years of experience in asphalt paving or road construction
- 2+ years in a supervisory role preferred
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of asphalt paving processes and equipment
- Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints, and specifications
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Certifications:
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- First Aid/CPR certification
- Must have a clean driving record and the ability to be insured to operate company vehicles.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment Drug & Alcohol test.
